Monogatari
The Monogatari series is a hard one to describe. Reading the summary on MAL or Wikipedia won't actually help you. While they are not "wrong", they are not right either. At it's core, it's a show that follows the main character, Araragi Koyomi, as he solves girls' various supernatural problems, typically based on Japanese folklore.
Like it or not, it is basically a harem, but I don't think that label does it any justice at all. It likes to play around with virtually every trope anime has to offer and attempts to subvert the viewer's expectations. Even the horrifying, and problematic, fan service is pretty easily defensible.
Having both read the novels and seen the anime, while the original material is great, you'd almost be doing yourself a disservice by reading them before watching the show. The adaptation is so well-done and the visuals are such an important part of the show that you'd struggle to imagine them separately, which is funny, considering how difficult this must've been to adapt. What we ended up with is a French new wave, Tarantino-inspired anime with some of the most interesting camera work and trippy visuals anime has to offer.
