I just added a fairly high play time requirement + need a gambling pass that is only obtainable by actually playing the server(doing slayer, achievements etc)

Let players play how they want, if they want to gamble, so be it. If you start adding restrictions in place, they'll probably turn to other forms that you won't be regulating. Reminds me of years ago when people used to bet if the first hit on an NPC would be odd or even, that kind of thing.

With regards to you being concerned about players who seem to be addicted to gambling in-game: If grown adults (lets be honest, the majority of rsps players aren't kids anymore) can't regulate themselves with regards to gambling on an rsps then it's not really something that you should worry about. I doubt many professional games studios have any sort of proper caps or tracking to keep an eye on their players habits, if its revenue for them then they probably couldn't care much.

this is a sad fact of making a game that is profitable, for it to be profitable, a lot of times you have to feed off addiction. There are very few games these days that survive without addiction, most war games feed off it for example. As developers, we have to take into affect what it may do to players. Preventing addiction is better for players, but not better for a game server. You have to find a good balance that keeps a player wanting to play, without suffering through their addiction. Most gamers are addicts, even if it means to escape reality into a game.

So, almost 3 years ago I went the complete opposite direction - https://www.rune-server.ee/general-discussion/chat/680054-gamblers-rsps.html

I personally would love to see a server that has the casino atmosphere. Much like RuneBet but with actual content built into a server. Players would flock to it to fulfill this addiction and it would create a very chaotic atmosphere, but it would be successful. I'm not much of a coder, but I am a business man and I could easily see this becoming a success. The owner of such a server would need the Odds to pay out if someone were to win, but the house always wins. Casinos make absolute BANK daily.

Imagine walking into Burthorpe games room and playing someone in Draughts/Runelink/Runeversi/Runesquares. Tournaments could commence and payouts could be Paypal, BTC, IRL prizes, OSGP/RS3, etc.? I would love to see this!

I've won quite a bit in Vegas before just playing BJ and slots.. it doesn't take much.

Just my take on this matter.

Players should be free to do what they like but games of chance should be limited where it amounts to gambling as much as possible. There is usually the distinction between an activity like staking and dicing, because the former involves an element of skill, even if it is influenced by random behaviour. To be honest it is usually extremely clear where the line is. If your server does not allow RWT this would not even be an issue because there would be no in real life money being lost. Players that actively use the game for their addiction do not deserve our protection. They are using the game against the rules.

I don't see why a server needs to be changed due to a players self destructive behavior (unless it somehow affected the server)

As many have mentioned above, I don't think it's for you to control.

If a player wishes to come and gamble spend their money as harsh as it may sound that's up to them, essentially there is a large group of RSPS players who only join servers to get rich quick/donate and gamble, in which case you're throwing that audience away to go to another server. where they will only go and do the same thing.

Wise Words Vippson!

every game is profitable, even the most well known game like dota and lol they have betting for skins. let me rewrite your statement..

Dota, same game that sells tons of custom effects, upgrades, chest passes, and others? That is feeding an addiction for players to buy. LoL i do believe survives on skins, just like FortNite, which also feeds some type of addiction to collect. every game has a form of addiction behind its sales, whether it be skins to collect, or packages in a war game to get a small boost ahead of another, or monthly/weekly subscriptions.

sad reality but thats how gaming world works, also they do betting for skin and sell it too, they also make profit from betting. (in my country its not a addiction its a profession here) gamblers makes more profit

A very interesting discussion you started right here.

In the first place I would say that a player should be able to gamble as much as he/she wants to gamble. I understand that addicted people spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to keep gambling on your server, and sometimes, you might feel bad for them.
However, if you don't allow them to gamble they will simply go to another server or find another way of gambling outside of the RSPS community. I think the majority of people that spend tons of money to gamble on private servers aren't on your game to play your game, but just to feed their gambling addiction.

It would be very interesting to see what happens if you would completely remove gambling and forbid it. My expectation is that players might last way longer and find other ways to reach a very common goal: be the richest (or atleast one of the richest).
Because yes, you can build up an insane bank without gambling, but it would take litteraly ages.

At the same time I think your server would have a huge fall back donation wise (what you've mentioned), but I'm sure you can develop a system where you can get the same amount of donations if not more (over a longer period).
I think something like this isn't setup in a week or have it fully intergrated when you launch a server. I think it's an iterative proces of testing out things like donation deals, certain monthly memberships on top of donator ranks with extra perks etc. and things like usefull battlepasses (/seasonpasses).

Again, a very interesting topic and I hope that someday a good running or potentional succesful server will take the risk and try this out.

It’s tricky balancing gambling in RSPS – people always find a way to scratch that itch, whether it’s on your server or somewhere else. I’ve seen players get hooked, spend crazy amounts, and sometimes they’re just feeding the habit rather than enjoying the game itself. On the flip side, I’ve come across servers like themulligans.org that have that casino vibe built in but keep it fun and rewarding for the players.
