Very cool project. I love seeing map recreations! This reminds me of the old digistr 474 maps back in All 474 Maps - Upper areas with a few dungeons..

This is one of my favorite eras of rs. Right around when Jagex started modernizing some of the aesthetics in the client but hadnt redone the city walls or much of the floor coloring/terrain changes.

Last year I had done some playing with recreating 194 maps and also had another project with tracking changes in the maps that were available by using git to track changes and then doing a commit per revision to see what was different.

For example: GitHub - MatthewBishop/RS2Map tracks 225->377 with all changes.

If I was to go at it again, I would change the files to be sorted based off of local position within the map, split each region into smaller areas to more easily track what area changed (so you look at maybe 8x8 areas rather than 64x64), and also include data on the terrain. By doing that you could hypothetically jump to a commit off a revision and download it and then stitch them all together.

Alternatively you could just download the most closest old map and new map to the one being recreated, split it up and if the terrain in an 8x8 matched either of the 2 move just those objects over. Most of jagexes map changes are pretty minimal between data revisions, sometimes its just swapping a chest or something out in port sarim for a new object that is used in a newly released quest.

Just commenting my 2 cents to say that a high fedilty project such as this is appreciated and invaluable. With each passing year osrs further becomes its own "private server" and we lose the nostalgia of the original game. Projects like SR can preserve that. With that said, it's hard to invest (play) time into an authentic server when it could close its doors at anytime for any reason, and I think thats a valid criticism that I've read on here.

pointless actually, nobody wants to play an old outdated version with no to little content/no updates hence why nobody plays it
